New Yam festival in Umuahia

Umuahia is currently celebrating her annual New yam festival; a festival that marks the harvest of yams planted around this time the previous year.

The celebration begins in some places with cultural dance shows at village squares, bush clearing and general cleaning of the community. For Umuahia, masquerades are seen dancing in the streets, while children dance and play and run from them.

The style of the celebration depends on the communities as the tradition varies from one clan to another. But it’s common among the Igbos that the King or chief first blesses the yam before declaring the festival open. In some areas it is usually violent as people drink and lose control during the festival.  This year there are reports of missing people, and cases of murder and kidnap.
